App Review: Inkling

Inkling
By Standard Nine Inc.
FREE

Inkling is possibly the future in textbook delivery. Most of the books ported over to the iPad have been electronic copies of the dead tree variety. Inkling takes a different approach by making textbooks more interactive. In the end you won't save a huge amount of money by opting for the electronic version of your biology textbook, but you'll probably get a lot more out of the reading experience.

Check it out here.

Home automation via iPad

The CM-IW2000 can allow you to use your iPad to control audio, video, lighting and the climate of your home. The system allows you to mount your iPad to the wall using it's control mount. I couldn't find the cost but you can check it out for yourself here.

Racing to build the iPad killer

This is what the technology industry have coined the next product they need to create in order to compete in the touch-tablet arena. In a market segment that has been almost completely ignored for more than a decade, suddenly every manufacturer is trying to play catch-up with Apple's iPad. It seems the race to build the iPad killer is on.

More Rumours

Something is brewing over at the Apple labs. It looks like Apple is testing a new iPod, iPad and an unknown device. Appleinsider is reporting that Apple is testing these three iDevices with iOS 4.1. This is based on new configuration descriptors in the iOS's USB configuration files.

Gmail's new iPad UI

Google has optimized their email web interface specifically for the iPad. The new "stacked card" interface is reminiscent of Apple's built in mail interface. The question remains: Why would you use the email web interface when there is a built in app for that?

iPad supply catching up to demand

It seems that the wait time for an iPad is getting shorter. An iPad can be had in as little as three days now. Sure beats the two week wait from a few months back. My guess is that by the time it catches up completely, we'll be seeing a new iPad, probably with all kinds of new features too. Then we can wait for that one all over again.

Can I have my iPad back grandma?

I've found an interesting article in the Canadian news paper, The National Post, that outlines how the elderly are opting in for the iPad. It's very forgiving and not as complicated as a regular computer. They can use it for reading, and with the accessibility features it's easy on older eyes.

It's an interesting read. Check it out here.

New medium troubles

It seems that the publishers of People magazine may be experiencing some challenges in porting their tree-based publication over to the iPad. In the rush to get issue one out-the-door they may have forgotten about compensating some of the content creation people - aka the photographers.

Someone actually built an iPad Arcade Cabinet

Hey, it looks like we didn't have to wait too long for someone else to make an iPad arcade cabinet. A UK company, Freekade.com builds small desktop/tabletop arcade cabinets and put one together for the iPad. It's up for auction right now on ebay UK.

Seeing one built provides a proof of concept for my own 'R-Cade' project. Keep following along, I've got a big announcement coming up!

They SHOT the iPad!

I found something on CrunchGear that is so disturbing, so gruesome, so completely wrong. Yet I almost can't stop watching it. Here's a hint… iPad meet bullet, bullet destroy iPad.

One Dock to lead them all

Say hello to the ultimate iPad/iDevice dock. It's truly the nirvana of docks! Although not available outside of Japan just yet, this may be something to look forward to some day.

What can't it do?

One of the awesome things we iPad owners love to do with our iPad is reading. Everything looks great on the big beautiful screen, especially full colour magazines. Esquire has put together a tongue-in-cheek list of things a magazine can do that your iPad can't.

Is the iPad bad for business?

As a new product in a closed ecosystem of development just how well will the iPad be embraced by big business? What are the obstacles and challenges that an IT department must face when it comes to brand new technologies.

I found an interesting article on just such a topic.

Follow the link for the full prospective.

iPad Classic Dock

This is the coolest iPad dock I've seen in a while. What's even more amazing is that the iPad actually fits in there!

Problem: One iPad, two or three users. It get's messy!

Considering the high cost of the iPad it only makes sense that you may need to share your precious iPad with others in your household. Apple certainly does not make it easy. The device seems to be intentionally designed for single user use. If you do share the iPad than you know all the personal stuff that you can't help but share when you pass it around. I've found an article with some useful tips on sharing.

Follow the link and play nice.

iPad Arcade Cabinet

I know this is old news, but I wanted to post this up here. Back in April, the 1st to be exact, Think Geek advertised this iCade for the iPad. It blew everyone away! It was a hoax, but too bad. I would love one, and so would quite a few other people. I want to share with you all that I am going to build one for myself! Check the side menu for the follow-up.

Here is the original iCade.

Charge your iPad from ANY USB port

A while back someone release the circuit layout for a USB charger for the iPad. It seems that Apple made a few adjustments to the standard USB port power requirements that stops almost all, save Apples own computers, from charging the iPad correctly. As usual some enterprising individuals are now producing an adapter that regulates a standard USB ports power so that it will charge your iPad. And hey, it's only $4.95!

Vimeo now officially supports iPad

If you've been frustrated trying to watch video from Vimeo that was supposed to work on the iPad but just never did, you're in luck. It seems that Vimeo has built in a work-around that will now let iPad viewers watch video form their iDevice. Nice :)

App Review - Toodledo

Toodledo
By: Toodledo
FREE

One of the neatest things I like to use my iPad for is to keep my todo list. I have been using pads of paper for years to keep track on my tasks. The iPad seems fairly well suited for the task. I have started to use it at work and around the house to keep track of what needs to be done. It's so much more natural to use the iPad with a productivity app than to use any type of laptop.

If you've been holding out for a good free app to improve your own productivity then you are in luck. If you run over the the App Store you can grab this handy app today for free.

With it you can enter all your tasks, add them to folders, and make little notes for each of them. It's a great way to keep things organized.

Check it out here.

Exclusive content for iPad

Wired magazine is offering 4 short films for this months issue just for iPad owners who buy the $3.99 app. This is an interesting marketing ploy to encourage the tech savvy to "get with the times" while also bolstering sales of the online edition. Actor and comedian Will Ferrell stars in the shorts.

You can pick it up here.

DIY: iPad Stand made from Lego

I saw this on TUAW today and thought I'd share it with you all. It seems a testament to the cost of the iPad that so many owners are forced to come up with their own creative accessories, having probably exhausting all their disposable income on the iPad itself.

It does look pretty cool though.

App Review: Duck Hunt: The Game

Duck Hunt: The Game
By: SoftGamers
FREE - For a limited time.

Anyone who ever owned or enjoyed a friends original Nintendo game system probably has fond memories of the good old days, when Mario and Luigi ate mushrooms and jumped their way to save the princess. Well, probably sitting next to that game system was the Duck Hunt cartridge and that bright orange gun used to shot down as many ducks as possible all the while being laughed at every time you missed by your own hunting dog. If you're like me, and suffer feelings of nostalgia for a simpler time than you're in luck. Duck Hunt is available right now, for free. I'm not sure how long it will be free, but you might as well grab while you can.

It is an iPhone/Touch app, but with the quality of video games back then, this game still looks great 2x'ed.
